Butler Group - Technology Audit
IGEL Technology, one of the world’s top five thin client vendors, has delivered a new range of Universal Desktop devices. Its thin client devices are aimed at small, medium, and large organisations across all verticals and address both the issues associated with traditional PCs, and the opportunities offered by digital services and desktop virtualisation. IGEL’s new Universal Desktop devices and Universal Management Suite offer a good range of hardware functionality and management controls, supporting the full spectrum of digital services using a variety of connection methods. Of particular note is IGEL’s introduction of a Universal Firmware Concept, whereby just one firmware image per operating system is available across all hardware platforms and Entry, Standard, and Advanced digital service ‘packs’ can be unlocked during manufacture. In Butler Group’s opinion, IGEL’s solution would benefit any organisation that wants to reduce its power consumption (and associated carbon footprint), consolidate desktop devices (remove the need for telephones, for example), and reduce the overall management overhead of desktop device provision.

Fraunhofer Institute ‘PC vs Thin Client’ - the economical benefits uncovered
Budgets are decreasing, but the pressure on IT departments to
deliver more for less is on the increase. This in-depth study carried
out by Fraunhofer UMSICHT uncovers the many economical advantages of
thin clients over PCs throughout the total lifetime of each solution.
The comparison takes into consideration every phase of a product life
cycle from manufacturing, to use, and ultimately to recycling and the
cost of disposal.

Environmental comparison of PC and thin client desktop
Environmental comparison of PC and thin client desktop equipment -
Organizations need to consider the environmental impact of everything
they do. At the same time new legislation continues to drive you
towards increased recycling and reuse. IGEL commissioned a study
carried by the well known Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, which
highlighted some staggering differences and uncovered many
environmental benefits of IGEL thin clients.
The
study found that thin clients require less space, are lighter, offer
significantly lower power consumption, use fewer raw materials, and up
to 99% can be recycled against a 76% normal recycling rate.
